Honolulu Community College (Ke Kulanui Kaiāulu o Honolulu), established in 1920, holds the distinction of being the oldest community college in Hawai‘i. It is an integral part of the 10-campus University of Hawai‘i system spread across the Hawaiian Islands. Originally founded as a technical school to support the growing needs of Hawai‘i’s workforce, Honolulu CC has evolved over the decades into a comprehensive institution offering a wide array of academic programs. The college’s main campus is situated close to downtown Honolulu in the historical Kapālama ahupua‘a, a land division steeped in Native Hawaiian history, and also operates specialized facilities on other parts of the island that cater to their automotive, diesel, aeronautics maintenance, and fire emergency programs.
Honolulu CC stands out for its dynamic liberal arts program, distinctive career and technical education offerings, and dedication to providing students with real-world experiences that bridge the gap between education and industry. Among its standout programs, the Music & Entertainment Learning Experience (MELE) stands as a shining example of how academic innovation can harmonize tradition with modern industry demands.

Pathways to Meaningful and Well-Paying Jobs
HonCC’s MELE program was established to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the music and entertainment industries. Through expert-led courses and real-world training, MELE provides invaluable networking skills and industry contacts, helping students build meaningful connections for their careers. MELE serves as a bridge between local traditions and global opportunities, equipping students to navigate and shape the evolving landscape of the entertainment world.
Curriculum Tailored for Success
The MELE program offers two primary tracks: Music Business & Production and Audio Engineering Technology. These pathways allow students to specialize in areas aligned with their passions and career aspirations:
- Music Business & Production: This track focuses on the commercial and managerial aspects of the industry, from marketing and copyright law to event production and artist management. Students learn how to support artists and navigate the complexities of the modern music economy.
- Audio Engineering Technology: This hands-on pathway immerses students in the technical aspects of music production, including recording, mixing, and live sound reinforcement. A state-of-the-art studio and industry-standard equipment ensure that students graduate with practical skills and professional portfolios.

Industry Connections and Real-World Experience
MELE maintains strong ties with industry leaders, both locally and internationally. Partnerships with organizations such as the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts and national music festivals provide students with invaluable networking opportunities. Regular guest lectures, workshops, and site visits allow students to gain firsthand experience and mentorship from established professionals.
Success Stories
Graduates of the MELE program have gone on to achieve remarkable success, working as producers, engineers, songwriters, and business managers in Hawai‘i and beyond. Their list includes: Noah Cronin (GRAMMY-nominated audio engineer), Lapana Ieriko (hit songwriter/producer), Corey Quinones (Marketing Director, Blue Note Hawaii), Daniel Gilad (Operations Manager, Henry Kapono Foundation), Jackson Waldhoff (bass player for ukulele icon Jake Shimabukuro) and Jaslyn Loftin (songwriter/music entrepreneur) to name a few.
Looking Ahead
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, HonCC’s MELE program remains committed to adapting and growing alongside it. Plans for future expansion include increasing student articulation to University of Hawaii West Oahu’s Academy for Creative Media program, introduction of MELE’s new Certificate of Achievement for working professionals and early college students, and upgrading the Mike Curb MELE studios with Dolby Atmos surround sound technology.
By blending cultural heritage with cutting-edge education, Honolulu Community College’s MELE program exemplifies the transformative power of community colleges. It not only prepares students for dynamic careers but also ensures that the spirit and sounds of Hawai‘i resonate far and wide.
